Tips for buying paver patio
- A solid compacted gravel base is 90% of the job — skimp here and the patio heaves and dips.
- Order 10% extra pavers (15%+ for herringbone or curves) for cuts and future repairs.
- Screed exactly 1 inch of bedding sand over the base; more than that and the pavers will settle unevenly.
- Slope the patio about 1/4 inch per foot away from the house so water drains.
- Use polymeric sand in the joints to lock pavers together and slow weeds.
- Rent a plate compactor — hand-tamping a base large enough for a patio won't hold up.
Frequently asked questions
How many pavers do I need for a patio?
Multiply the patio area by the pavers per square foot for your paver size, then add waste. A 10×12 patio of 4×8 pavers is about 594 pavers with 10% waste.
How much gravel base do I need under pavers?
A 4-inch compacted base is standard for patios. A 10×12 patio needs about 1.5 cubic yards of gravel at that depth.
How much bedding sand for pavers?
A 1-inch screeded layer. For a 10×12 patio that's about 10 cubic feet of sand.
How much extra should I buy?
10% for straight patterns; 15% or more for herringbone, diagonals or curved edges where you cut a lot of pavers.
